When Will The Lake Freeze Over?

Every year locals try to guess when the lake will freeze over. Long before my time there was one winter when it didn't. This year, because our autumn was so mild many assumed it wouldn't freeze over until December. I took the first two pictures at noon on Saturday. That is definitely ice over by the island. Hope this doesn't mean we're in for a cold-cold winter.

Winners will receive an autographed copy of my suspense thriller Dead Witness. Is you want to choose a date that's already taken, that's quite all right. We'll send out two books instead of one.

It looks so beautiful. I'm hoping our snow stays away this year, we're not so far north as you are, but we have two friends with us from the Deep South over Christmas and our climate will be a bit of a shock! Hope your winter is not too harsh. Hugs..

I'd be surprised if it could outlast this week's cold snap, so how about this Thursday, November 25th... a month before Christmas? (I've read Dead Witness already, but gave my copy away so I'm liking this contest opportunity!)

Joylene Butler said...

It's -22C as I type. I'm still wearing my pjs, plus socks, a sweater, and a scarf. LOL.

Good luck on your guess, Hilary. And stay warm, Carole.

Thanks for stopping by and following my blog. I posted but thought I was too late for the blog day hop.
Beautiful pictures. I think this cold snap will pass, perhaps it is too early for a freeze. I think by Christmas the lake will freeze. My date is December 23. I never read Dead Witness. I sure would love to read it.
Stay warm.

Hi Choices. It doesn't matter if you're late on the guess. Just by posting a comment you enter the contest. As for finishing the jog. It always takes me all day. I generally go back and take a closer look at the blogs after. Have a great day.

Love those pictures. We have had mild weather for Oct/Nov in Wisconsin~USA. It has been wonderful but; makes me wonder what's coming.

We had a lovely fall, didn't need a jacket to go outside. Then! The sun's shining, but even my big dog doesn't want to go out.

Thanks for stopping by, Sue. Good luck on my contest.

Joylene, your photos are breathtaking. Our property is also on a lake but the house is not near the water's edge. It was built before a time when people valued lake frontage. I'm sure we miss out on a lot of beautiful scenes. You are so lucky!

Joylene Butler said...

Laura, we're actually quite a distance from the water. It looks closer because we're up high. Getting down to the beach is quite a trek. Good for me though. I'm not near as active as I should be. Thanks for stopping by. You're entered for a copy of Dead Witness.

Stuart Aken said...

Lovely pics, Joylene. I'll go for 6th December for the freeze over.
I've followed the blog on Networked Blogs.
Good response from Blog Jog Day, I think.
Regards,
Stuart.

Nice pictures. My guess will be for December 1st. It will be fun to see who is closest in guessing when the lake will freeze over.

Joylene Butler said...

@Hi Stuart. Thanks for visiting.

@Hi Susanne. Good guess. Thanks for visiting.

It's a great view - nice & serene, but HELL WOULD FREEZE OVER before I would move back to the cold. You have my thumbs up for the nice pic.... & my sympathy for that weather. Going to be low/mis 80s on Thanksgiving Day here. Beach. For Sure. Sorry. I'm being mean. Hah!

Hi Joylene! I'm here for the Blog Jog. I was away from the computer on Sunday, so I'm catching up today. Thanks for visiting my blog, FreakyFrugalite.

I'm following you on Google Friends Connect. :D

Have a great week!

Joylene Butler said...

Dave, you're never late. Ever. And I'm glad you're warm. With the wind chill it's -32C in my little part of the world. Frizzin cold doesn't come close to what this is. Pretty though. Stay warm good fellow.

Joylene Butler said...

Hi Rebecca. It's so nice you were able to stop by. You're entered in the contest. Have a wonderful week yourself.

i'm guessing dec. 15th.

Dec.15th is a good guess. Good luck, David. I'm marking everybody's guess on the calendar.

I'm guessing November 27. Best of luck with the new book.

Rick Moltzon

Joylene Butler said...

Hi Rick. It was -32 C this morning, so you could be right. Thanks for stopping by. Have a safe week.

Rick Moltzon said...

Wow- even the internet weather reports have that wrong. We'll try not pig out on too much turkey here on Thurs. That would make it a safe week. (BTW, I fat-fingered my e-mail address, which is correct on deadlyprose. It's ricktoday1 not ricktoday!)

Joylene Butler said...

Thanks for letting me know, Rick, just in case. The temperature has warmed up to -18 C, which is actually very deceiving because the sun's shining so brightly. Plus I have the wood furnace and the fireplace going. I'm sweating buckets!

Good luck, Rick.

Ashton said...

There is a warm front coming, so I'm guessing January 5th.

Joylene Butler said...

I never win on the guess for freezing. But I've won a few times for breakup. Generally it's the last week in April. Good luck, Ashton. Your guess is as good as mine.

Martha Engber said...

Hey Joylene.

I'll guess Dec. 13, because 13 is such a lucky number.

Sheila Deeth said...

I'm guessing December 3rd. No reason. Gorgeous pictures though and I'd love to read the book.

Joylene Butler said...

Martha, your guess is official recorded. Good Luck.

Hi Sheila. I think December 3rd is as a good a choice as any. Good luck.

Bobby Tootsooey said...

I've never even seen snow. One of these days! I'm guessing December fourth.

Joylene Butler said...

Good luck, Bobby. Thanks for participating.

Good luck, Suzanne!

Carol J. Garvin said...

Okay, if the darned lake isn't going to freeze today and I still have time to make another guess, I'll suggest the day that I'm most focused on right now... the end of NaNoWriMo, November 30th. How's that? ;)

Jackie Pervizaj said...

I love lakes! And there are 7 siblings in my family, so December 7th! Whoo-hoo! This is fun. Thanks, Joylene!

Joylene Butler said...

LOL - Carol, I like your attitude! Good luck.

Hi Jackie! Thanks. And good luck to you too.

Cheryl Manning said...

I've been good this year, Joylene, and I should win! January 10th.

Joylene Butler said...

Thanks for the post, Cheryl. I'll add your guess now.

Rick Moltzon said...

Since I missed on the 27th, there's still time and there's supposed to be an above freezing day on 11/30, my last and best guess is 12/8.

abitosunshine said...

I'm guessing January 11th, which is my son's birthday..:-)

Photos are beautiful!

Joylene Butler said...

Hi Ruth. I have you down for Jan.11th. Good luck. Thanks for stopping by.

Danny Stachney said...

I actually tried researching first but there's nothing recorded. Dang. Okay, I'm guessing Dec. 23rd. Kind of cool if it freezes before Christmas. That way you can play on your new skidoo. Right!

Joylene Butler said...

Hi Danny. Is it too early to say Merry Christmas? Thanks for entering.

Hi Joylene. You have the nicest pictures! I want to guess November 11 too, with Ruth. I don't know why. Stay warm in the frozen north!

Mattias Kroon said...

Hi Joylene!

I am proud that such a talented author made it to our community on FB! Here in Sweden we have a lot of snow too and it is coming way too early...

Joylene Butler said...

Hi Shethra77, I knew what you meant. And don't worry; I have those days almost every day. Good Luck.

Hi Mattias. Thank you for your kind words. You should guess. Though, if you win, I'm not sure your copy would reach you before Christmas.

Thanks for stopping by.

abitosunshine said...

Thanks Joylene! Shethra77, happy to share the date with you!

Holli said...

Joylene, your hometown looks beautiful. Coming from a city where snow is rare, it's an amazing sight. In New Orleans we consider anything below 60 as extremely cold. I am going to randomly guess the lake will freeze December 22.

This is such an interesting contest. I wish I could think of something like that to do here.

Hi Holli. This contest is going so well I've decided to do it again at breakup. Thanks for participating. One day we'll visit New Orleans. Always wanted to. I may even have some relatives there, descendants from the Arcadians in Nova Scotia.

Amanda Borenstadt said...

Brrr! I'm cold just looking at the pictures.
I think I'll choose Dec. 4th.

Joylene Butler said...

Hi Amanda. I've got your guess posted. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your sympathy. LOL Hope you're getting plenty of sunshine.
