I'm Choked, But I Can Still Breathe

I'm choked. Some cyberpunk hacked into my computer, stole my addy and is now sending crap to other addies under the quise of it being from me.

I know I'm not alone. And this has happened before. BUT this particular email address is on my bookmarks, business cards, not to mention thousands of copies of my novel Dead Witness.

So, why am I bothering to blog about it?

It's my way of advance-apologizing for any garbage you may receive in your inbox, apparently, addressed from me. I'm on a Mac, so while these emails are a pain in the butt, they aren't viruses.

Hopefully, s/he has already grown bored and has moved on to someone else. Sorry about that, somebody else. Or maybe s/he was struck by conscience and has decided to do something productive with their lives.

Thanks for listening; I'm feeling a bit better now. If you do receive an email from me and it looks suspicious, please forward it to me as an attachment with full headers. Meanwhile, I'm changing my password. I suggest everybody do that at least twice a year.

  1. you'd think they'd have something better, or at least more entertaining, to do. Bummer.

  6. Sorry to read that, Joylene. What a pain. I haven't had spam or weirdness from your email (although unless I'm expecting something, I delete attachments unopened, regardless of who they come from).

One bit o' weirdness: you emails started going into my spam files a couple weeks ago. I keep despamming them, but the next goes into the spam file, and I have to assure Windows Mail it's not spam.

  7. That's really rotten! I tend to get lulled into complacency since Macs aren't often targets of hackers. But this just goes to show vigilance in matters of cyber security is important for all of us. Are you on a wireless network?

  8. I'm so sorry for your problem, but glad your're feeling a bit bettee. There's a lot of that email garbage going on right now. I've been getting invitations to join porn sites and mating sites from people who are so not into such things!

  9. That's good to know, Keith. Could mean that the email addy is connected to spam somewhere along the line. Maybe not in your inbox, but in somebody's.

  10. Carol, I am on wireless. Does that make a difference? I've contacted my provider to let him know. I already changed my password.

  11. Pat, I guess we have to accept that part of the internet we love so much. Sort of like having a baby who continually poops his diaper. Disgusting, but what're you going to do?

  12. When someone else is also wireless, your wireless network shows up on their list of options. A good password will keep honest folk out, which is why you have one, but a hacker can often crack it and then has access into your computer. Complex passwords may be a nuisance but I recommend them. Mine is a couple dozen characters long, and combines random numbers and letters... impossible to guess at. That may not be how yours was accessed, but it's one possibility.

  13. Joy, that happened to me too. Someone hacked into my Facebook account. I was on vacation---didn't have access to a computer. So I didn't even know about it for a while! It was a vacation I promised my husband--no lap top---you will have all my attention. I received a phone call from my sister telling me there was porno on MY FB page!!!! I had to make my husband stop the car, go knock on doors to see if someone would let me use THEIR computer to fix it!!! I don't know why people do that to us! They need to get a life!

  14. Katt, you must tell me more. Whose house did you stop at? Were they nice? Or did they call the police and scream for HELP?

LOL you are one ... well, too cute for words.

Thanks, Carol. If my provider ever gets back to me, maybe we can fix this problem.

  15. I'm so sorry Honey. It's awful. I don't know how you feel and I can bet it's bad. A few weeks ago someone phished by twitter account and I sent individual apologies. I felt so bad. What amazed me was my reaction. My heart was racing and all kinds of feelings came up. I can't imagine how you must feel. You change your password twice a year. Wow to all your accounts or just your email. wow I"m still using the password I had at your place 3 million years ago. wow

  16. I've been less than diligent in changing my PW regularly. This is a lesson well learned.
