Which Email Account Do You Recommend?

Thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Penticton last week. Had a great time at the En'owkin Centre. However I came home to find our baby, 17-year-old Pretty Boy,  missing. That's all I can say about him for the moment, I'm still too choked up. He was a precious cat with the sweetest disposition.

I also came home to a glitch in my yahoo account. My SMTP no longer sends out yahoo messages. It had been building up to this moment for over a year. I use Mail for Mac, and frankly, I refuse to give it up, it's just too darn convenient.

After three days on the phone with my Apple Tech-buddy Joe, I'm now looking for a great email account. I have to keep my cluculzwriter at yahoo dot ca since it's in my novels and on my business cards and bookmarks, but I need something I can use daily without fear of it crashing. My provider no longer gives out email accounts. I use Gmail as a backup, but don't really like the way it reacts to my Mail.app. It's a long story, but every time I sign in, 300+ unseen messages left on the server upload. Yes, I'm tried changing the setting but to no avail.

So the question of the day is: WHICH EMAIL ACCOUNT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

I need an app that allows me offline access. Is it time to consider paying for an account?

On a personal note, please accept my apologies for getting behind in blog-reading. I know many of you may not have noticed my absence, but I'm very aware, and I hope to change that soon. You  mean a lot to me and I don't take your efforts to post lightly. Just wanted to let you know that.

Fall has arrived, and while I find it incredibly beautiful, it is a difficult time of year for me. Spiritually I know I should live in the moment and simply enjoy the beauty of autumn. I know this, and I am working on it.

Here's a series of photographs of Autumn at Cluculz Lake (pronounced: clue-cus; for some reason the second L is silent)

  1. Beautiful pictures! You make me want to move there.

Sorry I can't help with the mail thing. I'm technically illiterate and get my mail through my internet provider. Good luck though.

  2. Sorry to learn of Pretty Boy's disappearance. I hope he shows up soon, safe and sound.

Don't know what email to suggest. My domain gives me email, but I also have a yahoo and gmail acct backup accts. I know hotmail.com is a free email service. Might try them.

    1. Thanks, Keith. I loved the shots you guys took in Vancouver. It's so annoying that I'm this far away. Otherwise I would have had you over for a huge meal. Ah, guess we'll have to meet in Montreal like we planned.

  3. Oh, dear! I'm so sorry to hear about Pretty Boy. A heart-wrenching homecoming, but I hope he turns up. Maybe he missed your feminine company and wandered to a neighbour's for a little TLC in your absence???

Sorry to hear about your e-mail problem, too. I also use the Mac Mail software, with Telus providing our primary family addresses, but I also have additional accounts with Gmail and Yahoo which I use for different purposes. I prefer Gmail, but then I haven't experienced any problems with it. I don't choose to have my Gmail messages forwarded to my Mac Mail account, though, so that may be why. I stay logged in to Gmail, and whenever I'm online I click its bookmark and check from there for messages. I've noticed my Mac Mail is very slow at sending messages this fall... seems to "think" a while before finding sending something off. Not sure what that's about, but so far it continues to work. ::keeping fingers crossed::

Your fall colours are gorgeous! They're starting around here, but not to that extent. There's a lot of melancholy attached to fall because it's a visible ending to so much of what we love about summer, and a warning that long, cold, snowed-in days are approaching. I have a neighbour who lives alone and says she literally hates fall for that reason. She can't drive at night or in bad weather, so even here at the coast she finds herself housebound a lot in winter.

    1. Carol, I was so surprised to see the leaves turning in Kelowna while I was there. I just assumed we were ahead of everyone. The most beautiful of fall days was New Brunswick last Thanksgiving. There were miles and miles of red leaves. It was incredible. My neighbour starts to get depressed Sept 1st every year. Now that's sad.

  4. If you don't like gmail and yahoo isn't an option, you can try hotmail or AOL.

You do seem to have more than your share of sorrows. I'm so sorry about Pretty Boy.

  5. Have you thought about having your Yahoo emails forwarded to your new address? That's what I do with the account I have through my publisher. Everything pops up in a specified folder in my Gmail. :)

P.S. I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. :(

    1. Hi Carrie. I receive yahoo fine, it's when it comes time to send from the account. I have both gmail and yahoo set up so they arrive in my mail.app, but about a year ago I started getting an error message when I tried send from my yahoo account. The fellow at Apple was baffled. He did have a customer who finally ended up paying for yahoo. Sad if I have to do that when there are still so many free.

  6. Very sorry to hear about Pretty Boy. Hopefully he has just gone walkabout and will return home soon.

As for email addresses: I use yahoo. It's been pretty darn good.

Hope you have some happy news.

  10. Hi Joylene,
First of all, Penny and I are sending you peaceful, hopeful thoughts.
Not sure about the offline option, but I have a Hotmail account with the brilliant Skydrive application that allows for word document formats and a huge collection of photos.
Although little evidence of Autumn here, I like to think of the beauty within the resplendent colours that Autumn offers us. Your photos are stunning. Joylene, you take very good care of YOU!
    In kindness, Gary

  11. So sorry to hear about your kitty. Perhaps he will turn up yet. Glad you are home - hope things settle down for you a bit.

I have three email accounts - Hotmail, which I have used for as long as I can remember, Yahoo, which I use for my teen writing classes, and Gmail, which I signed up for when I started blogging and had to have a Gmail account. Of the three, I still prefer Hotmail best. I like the format and ease of use, just seems more user friendly overall.

    Have a great week!
    Take care,
    Karen

  12. Hi Joylene .. I use gmail, after stopping my paid account ... but I find sometimes I can't find things - because gmail believes I want everything lumped together and I'd rather not ... oh well!

I don't know - but I only use a pc ... looks like hotmail might be an option as Karen suggests ..

Oh dear I am so sorry to hear about Pretty Boy - they have that incredible connection with nature don't they ... and it sounds like the song of Cluculz may have called him - at least he'll be enveloped in many spirits of time and space .... with many thoughts - Hilary

    1. You are so right on, Hilary. Pretty Boy was called, I think. The morning he disappeared, my neighbour said he saw him down by the water, mesmerized by the lake. He said PB looked as if he was hypnotized.

Can we access hotmail while offline? I had no idea. I mostly depend on yahoo but also have a hotmail.
